Helsinki Philharmonic Choir 10th Anniversary

The Helsinki Philharmonic Choir (HPC) was founded in 2007. Its predecessors are the Savonlinna Opera Festival Choir and the Finnish Philharmonic Choir. HPC produces many concerts itself but also co-operates with many orchestras and different music institutions. The singers are music students, professionals or very experienced choir singers.

HPC has performed Janá?ek's From the House of the Dead in Stockholm with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen, Tippett's A Child of Our Time with Tapiola Sinfonietta and Järnefelt's The face of the Fatherland with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra. In February 2012 HPC performed with the world-famous bass-baritone Bryn Terfel at his concert in Finlandia Hall. In May 2012 the choir performed at the Finnish National Opera in Tero Saarinen's Mariage-ballet (Stravinsky: Les noces) conducted by Mikko Franck. In December 2012 the choir toured Finland with the Pori Sinfonietta and Barbara Hendricks. In spring 2015 the male voices of the choir were in Sibelius's Kullervo at the National Opera. In May 2015 the HPC visited Grasse, France to perform at Expo Rose.

The choir's recent own productions have included for example Orff's Carmina burana, Schnittke's, Verdi's and Mozart's Requiems as well as Rachmaninov's All Night Vigil and several a cappella concerts. The Choir's Artistic Director as off fall 2016 is Jonas Rannila. His predecessors are Hannu Norjanen (2007-2012) and Dani Juris (2012-2016).

In 2017 the HPC celebrates its 10th anniversary. The year will begin with an opera concert with the Tapiola Youth Symphony Orchestra and bass Jaakko Ryhänen. In March the choir will perform Verdi's Requiem three times, in Kirkkonummi, Espoo and Helsinki. In June the HPC welcomes the Cantifolia Choir to Finland for a return visit and in July the choir will perform at the Heinävesi Music Festival.

In the fall the choir will perform Mozart's Requiem, however, only until the end of Lacrymosa, the last part Mozart himself began. The Requiem will be completed by performing Morten Lauridsen's Lux aeterna. In September there will be a 10th Anniversary Concert in the Temppeliaukio Church. This concert consists of several Finnish compositions, including a world premiere by Lauri Mäntysaari, accompanied by Helsinki Sinfonietta. The year will be completed by performing Britten's Saint Nicolas Cantata. The piece will be dramatized by Ville Saukkonen. Jorma Uotinen will be Santa Claus.

The prestigious patron of the anniversary is President Tarja Halonen.
