HELSINKI
PHILHARMONIC
CHOIR
The Helsinki Philharmonic Choir (HFK) was founded in 2007. The choir has established itself as one of Finland's leading large choirs. The choir is known for its bold repertoire choices and philharmonic expressiveness.
The repertoire of recent years includes, among others, Verdi, Mozart and Brahms' Requiem, Klami's Psalmus and Orff's Carmina Burana. The choir has also been seen in opera and operetta productions, throwing itself into the choral scenes of Puccini's Turandot (2020, 2023), Lehár's Giuditta (2019), Verdi's Don Carlo (2018) or Bernstein's Candide (2018, 2022). In autumn 2023, the HFK visited the Finnish National Opera and Ballet's production of Verdi's Messa da Requiem.
HFK has collaborated with numerous orchestras, including Pori Sinfonietta, Mikkeli City Orchestra, Vaasa City Orchestra, Kirkkonummi Chamber Orchestra, Helsinki Sinfonietta, Student Union Players and the Finnish National Opera and Ballet Orchestra.
The choir has visited the Mikkeli Music Festival (2024), Kangasniemi Music Weeks (2022, 2024), Hamina Tattoo (2023), Joroinen Music Festival (2022), Ilmajoki Music Festival (2018) and Heinävesi Music Festival (2017). In 2015, the visit destination was Exporose Grasse in France. The choir can also be heard regularly at church services at Helsinki Cathedral. In addition, small groups formed by the choir members celebrate both smaller and larger events by request.
The singers of the choir are music students, professional musicians or experienced singing enthusiasts. Tommi Niskala has been the artistic director of the choir since autumn 2024. Previously, the artistic directors have been Jonas Rannila (2016-2024), Dani Juris (2012-2016) and Hannu Norjanen (2007 - 2012).
